Norfolk State and North Carolina Central to meet in 40th Circle City Classic HBCU Game

President of IBE Alice Watson

This year marks a milestone for one of the most anticipated events in Indianapolis — the 40th Annual Circle City Classic.

On Sept. 28, two powerhouse HBCUs, the Norfolk State Spartans and the North Carolina Central Eagles, will clash at Lucas Oil Stadium downtown. The event not only celebrates HBCU football excellence but also reflects four decades of cultural and economic influence in the city.

The game kicks off at 3 p.m. following the iconic Circle City Classic Parade. For the Norfolk State Spartans, this will be their first-ever appearance in the Classic, while the North Carolina Central Eagles will be returning for the third time.

President & CEO of Indiana Black Expo Alice Watson highlighted the significance of this year’s Classic.

“The Circle City Classic this year will be special as it not only brings competitive HBCU football to Indianapolis, but this is the 40th anniversary,” Watson said in a statement. ‘We are so proud of the 40 years of impact and history that this event has made in our community and throughout the Midwest.”

The Circle City Classic is about more than just football. Since its inception, the event has awarded over $5 million in scholarships to students nationwide, helping to further the educational dreams of future leaders.

Additionally, the Classic has contributed more than $340 million to the Indianapolis economy, establishing itself as a cornerstone event in Indianapolis.

Norfolk State University’s Director of Athletics Melody Webb expressed her feelings for Classic.

“’We are excited to be a part of this year’s Circle City Classic, going up against North Carolina Central,” Webb said in a statement. “This tremendous event, celebrating the 40th anniversary, is a fitting stage for a highly anticipated conference showdown.”

Norfolk State enters the game with high hopes, eager to make their mark in their Classic debut. The Spartans are known for their dynamic offense and robust defense, which will be tested against the experienced North Carolina Central Eagles. The Eagles, having participated in the Classic twice before, bring a well-rounded team with a strong defensive lineup and an agile offensive squad.

No Circle City Classic would be complete without the renowned “Battle of the Bands” halftime show. This year, the NCCU Sound Machine Marching Band will face off against Norfolk State’s Spartan Legion, promising a high-octane showcase of musical and marching talent that reflects the passionate culture of HBCUs.

With a legacy that spans 40 years, the Circle City Classic continues to bring the best of HBCU football, bands, culture and community spirit to Indianapolis. For more details, visit circlecityclassic.com.
