Jackson State beats Prairie View, secures fifth-straight SWAC title

Jackson State recorded its 16th straight win, handing Prairie View A&M a 75-65 loss in a back-and-forth contest at William Nicks Building on Monday afternoon. The Lady Tigers went into halftime with a six-point lead, but the Lady Panthers kept fighting, resulting in six lead changes in the second half. However, Jackson State was able to take control late and come away with the win.

The win secured the fifth consecutive SWAC regular season title for the Jackson State women.

This win was led by a balanced scoring effort for Jackson State. Ti’lan Boler led the scoring with 21 points. Keshuna Luckett added 17, while Miya Crump also contributed 16 points. The Lady Tigers’ ability to generate opportunities at the charity stripe was crucial to their success. They drew 24 personal fouls on the defense, which led to 29 points (94% shooting) from the free throw line. They were efficient overall, as they put up 1.11 points per possession on 62% true shooting.

Prairie View A&M was led by Ryann Payne, who put up 21 points. The Lady Panthers shot 26-of-66 from the field and 4-of-11 from behind the arc. That netted out to an average of 0.97 points per possession.

Jackson State proved once again that it is a tough matchup. A battle with SWAC foe Arkansas-Pine Bluff is the Lady Tigers’ next test. They will meet on March 7 at the Williams Center. This afternoon’s defeat was another tough result for Prairie View A&M. It had lost in its last outing against Alcorn State and was looking to rebound. A March 9 matchup with conference rival Texas Southern in Houston is the Lady Panthers’ next shot at a win.
