HBCU Football: Winston-Salem State Ready for a Comeback

Winston-Salem State University comes into the 2024 HBCU football season in sixth place in the CIAA Predicted Order of Finish. After a season of close calls, losing four games by a combined total of just 15 points, the Rams are geared up for a redemption tour. The CIAA dropped its preseason poll during media day. Coach Robert Massey made clear that the Rams are ready to rock 2024.

Four Rams were spotlighted on the All-CIAA preseason team, giving the squad a solid backbone. Defensive end Camar Kyle, defensive back Justin Fleming, offensive lineman Darius McDuffie, and junior transfer Jaylin Norris are the stars to watch in Division II HBCU football. Their preseason accolades highlight their grind and will be key in flipping those close L’s into solid W’s.

Winston-Salem State University Players To Watch

Camar Kyle (DE, Raleigh, NC): Heading into his senior year, Kyle is the defensive anchor for the Rams. Last season, he stacked up 52 tackles, 15.5 tackles for loss, and 5.5 sacks. With his knack for clutch fumble recoveries and game-changing plays, offenses will need a game plan just for him.

Justin Fleming (DB, Greensboro, NC): Fleming’s got the secondary on lock. Known for his game-reading skills and pivotal interceptions, he’s the guy you don’t want throwing near.

Darius McDuffie (OL, Durham, NC): McDuffie’s job is to keep the QB safe and the lanes open. His leadership on the O-line is going to be critical for the Rams’ game plan.

Jaylin Norris (DL, Pensacola, FL): This junior transfer is bringing fresh energy to the D-line. His ability to disrupt the offense and get to the QB will be a major boost for the Rams.

Last season’s narrow losses showed the Rams where they needed to tighten up. Coach Massey and his team have been putting in work this offseason. The Rams struggled to close out games because of issues running the ball and stopping the run on defense. Massey and his squad have been laser-focused on these areas.

“We brought in some mid-year guys through the portal,” Massey said. “We gave them a chance to gel with the team and understand our system. We also boosted our running back situation and added depth to our O-line to keep Daylin Lee on his feet.”

Daylin Lee, a rising sophomore from Shelby, NC, had an impressive freshman year, throwing for 1,845 yards and 18 touchdowns. Protecting him better this season will be crucial for the Rams’ success. With new talent and experienced players stepping up, Lee’s got the support he needs to shine. He is a rising star in HBCU football.

On defense, the Rams have beefed up their linebacker corps and D-line. Bringing in transfer linebackers and adding size up front will help clog the middle and stop the run, key to holding onto leads late in games.

“Our biggest upgrade has been at the linebacker spot,” Massey said. “We put some size on the D-line and added guys who can fly around and make plays.”

The Rams kick off their season on August 31 against fellow HBCU Bluefield State in Bluefield, West Virginia. This early game is a chance to set the tone and come out swinging. Coach Massey is pumped, highlighting the added depth and competition for starting spots as game-changers.

“We feel really good about this season,” Massey said. “Last year, we lost four games by a total of 15 points. That shows you the value of those starters. Now, with added depth, our starters have to compete for their spots, making us a better team.”

With a mix of seasoned vets and hungry newcomers, the Rams are ready to turn those close calls into victories. The talent is there, the drive is real, and the Ramly is hyped for a comeback season. As Coach Massey put it, “You know, Ramly, we’re going to be okay. We’ll be very surprised.” Keep your eyes on Winston-Salem State; they’re out to make some serious noise in the CIAA this year.
