FMU baseball players Young and Ruiz participate in MBP HBCU All-Star Game

The baseball honors continue for the Lions as Jalen Young and Luis Ruiz were selected to participate in the 2023 Minority Baseball Prospects (MBP) HBCU All-Star Weekend at Coolray Field this past weekend.


Young and Ruiz played on Team Andre Dawson where they took on Team Ralph Garr in the contest.


Team Ralph Garr won a nail-biter against Team Andre Dawson by a score of 8-7.


Both Ruiz and Young both were instrumental parts of the Lions' this past season as they made a run in the HBCU World Series.


Young was 1-for-1 from the plate, hitting a single on the afternoon. Young also scored a run and produced an RBI in the win.


When speaking to head baseball coach Florentino Burgos, he said "I'm super excited for Jalen and Luis for the opportunity. This speaks volumes on the hard work and dedication that the team brings; to have two of our players be selected for the HBCU All-Star Game."


In 2023, Young led the Lions in hits with 51 on the season, while Ruiz was second in hits with 47 on the year. Ruiz also led the team in home runs (5) and RBIs (36). Young led the team in stolen bases with 21 and was second in RBIs with 26 on the year.


In addition, Young was selected as the 2023 HBCU World Series Most Valuable Player as the FMU Lions were crowned 2023 HBCU World Series Champions.
